Heading to Venice in 2024? You may be surprised to learn that you will have to pay a fee to enter Venice on certain days if you are not spending the night. This long-anticipated measure aims to ease the heavy toll of over tourism that the UNESCO-listed city has struggled with for years.
Venice has implemented an entry tax for all day-trippers. It costs 5 Euros and must be paid by day trippers over the age of 14. Those staying overnight in Venice accommodation will not have to pay but will still need to register to visit Venice via a new online booking platform.
The Venice Access Fee will only apply during peak hours from 8:30am to 4pm. Those arriving later for dinner or a concert won't have to pay.
Day trippers can pay the fee through the online booking platform. Upon booking, visitors will receive a QR code that they can then scan at electric turnstiles located at Venice's main access points, including the main train station, to gain access to the city. Officials say they will also check people's QR codes at random.
The Venice City Council has said that they won't limit the number of visitors. Instead, they plan to raise the entry fee on days when visitor numbers reach a certain threshold.
The access fee will be due on 29 days between April 25 and July 14 in 2024. The dates are mainly on weekends and are as follows:
April 25-30
May 1-5
May 11-12
May 18-19
May 25-26
June 8-9
June 15-16
June 22-23
June 29-30
July 6-7
July 13 -14
When you go to the site there are 2 options. You can either click on the payment option or click on the exempt option.
To pay, click on the date you plan to visit and the number of people including children under 14 (which you will not have to pay for). Enter the names of the adult travelers – in other words, those who need to pay the fee. You’ll then have 10 minutes to pay.
Once completed, you will be emailed a document listing your initials, your booking code, the day(s) you’ve booked and a QR code. You can print it off or show it on your phone when questioned. The ticket will only show the individuals paid for, not anyone under the age of 14.
If you are staying over night in Venice you do not have to pay the fee. Although, you will have to request an exemption. You will do this by going to the same website and click the exemption tab. You will be directed to page that lists all the reasons for exemptions. On of the first exemption reasons is “I am a guest of an accommodation facility located in the municipality of Venice.” This is most likely the reason you will choose. There are exemptions as well.
Enter the dates of your stay, your name, date and place of birth, home address, email and phone number. You will also enter the name of where you’re staying. If it doesn’t pop up, you can enter it manually.
On the next page, you can enter the names of other people in your party – you don’t have to make a separate request for each.
Finally you’ll enter your phone number. Make sure it’s correct and can make international calls, because the next page will give you just 60 seconds to call a local number in Venice, which will verify your phone number.
The call won’t connect, but it’ll confirm your number on the system, which will take you to the next page. Finally, your QR codes! You can download them direct, or have them emailed to you.
This is a trial phase in 2024, but is expected to be implement in 2025.
